Heading: Regain Control: How to Change Your Mind’s “Old Film”

Sub-heading: A practical NLP exercise rooted in reliance on Allah (Tawakkul).

As Muslims, we know that Allah is Ever-Watchful (Al-Aleem, Al-Baseer). However, when we are in pain or distress, it is human nature for our minds to become so focused on a traumatic memory—an “old film”—that we temporarily forget this reality. The intense emotion hijacks our focus.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) gives us practical tools to manage our mental state. These tools quiet the noise in the mind, allowing the Qalb (Heart) to reconnect with the awareness of Allah’s presence and mercy.

The mind does not know the difference between reality and a vividly imagined memory; it responds to images and feelings. Therefore, to break the pattern, we must change how the mind “projects” that film.

Here is a foundational NLP exercise, often called a “Submodality Shift” or the beginning of a “Swish Pattern.”

The “Mental Screen” Exercise: Step-by-Step

Perform this exercise with intention and certainty.

Step 1: Identify the Unwanted Pattern

Bring to mind the memory, the specific person, or the past event that triggers the unwanted feeling you wish to release.

  • Ask yourself: “When I think about that time, what am I seeing on the screen of my mind?”
  • Note: Observe the qualities of this mental movie. Is it in color or black and white? Is it bright or blurry? Is it close to you or far away? Is it a moving picture or a stuck snapshot?

Step 2: Acknowledge the Physical Feeling ( The State)

While looking at the mental picture, notice how your body feels.

  • Is there tightness in your chest?
  • Is your breathing shallow?
  • Is your heart racing?
  • Note: The goal is to identify the feeling, not to get lost in it.

Step 3: Change the Setting (Shrinking and Dimming)

Now, we will alter the settings of the screen in your mind. This is the most crucial part of the process.

  • Instruct your mind’s eye: “Make the picture of that old film very small.”
  • Make it tiny: Shrink it until it is the size of a small, distant dot in the corner of your mental screen.
  • From Color to B&W: Drain the color from that tiny dot until it is black and white.
  • Add a Blur: Place a foggy, blurry layer over it so it is no longer clear.
  • Distance It: Move that tiny, blurry, black-and-white dot far, far away from you, until it almost disappears.

Step 4: The New Projection (Re-patterning the Mind)

Now that the old, painful film is distant and dim, it is essential to replace it with a new image connected to your faith, healing, and peace.

  • Introduce a New Thought: Ask yourself: “What do I want instead?” You want peace. You want reliance on Allah (Tawakkul).
  • Create a New Screen: On your mental screen, project a new, large, and bright image. Fill this screen with something that represents light and tranquility to you. For example, see the Noor of Allah, or a serene place, or a moment when you felt His mercy deeply.
  • Amplify the Feeling: As you look at this peaceful, bright image, take a deep breath and physically feel that calmness entering your body.

Step 5: The “SWISH” Pattern (Rapid Transformation)

This is where the real power lies. You must perform this action quickly, like flipping a switch.

  1. Look at the tiny, blurry, painful dot for only one second.
  2. Immediately, with a forceful sound (“SWISH!”), replace that dot with your large, bright, peaceful image, filling the entire screen.
  3. The old picture is gone; the new, peaceful picture is bright and dominant.
  4. Repeat this rapid switch 5–10 times: Painful dot -> SWISH! -> Bright, Peaceful Image.

The Islamic Perspective: Spiritual Control

You mentioned that the mind doesn’t know Allah, but your Qalb (Heart) does. This NLP tool is about creating a moment of stillness in the mind so your heart can connect with the reality of Allah’s help.

  • As you shrink and remove the old picture from your screen, command your mind: “This memory is an illusion; the only reality is Allah’s help.”
  • As you bring in the new, peaceful picture, say in your heart: “Allah is with me.” (Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal-wakeel).

A Final Note on Consistency

This exercise is not a one-time pill; it is a mashq (practice). Whenever the old memory or feeling tries to return, immediately perform the “SWISH” pattern and replace it with the light and peace of your connection with Allah.

Through this practice, your mind will learn that whenever it is triggered by that old pain, it must immediately shift towards peace.

InshaAllah, this will bring you rapid relief and deepen your awareness of Allah’s presence in your healing journey.
